How does Kybella work? Kybella contains a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a substance the body naturally uses to break down and absorb dietary fat. When injected into the treatment area, it destroys fat cells under the chin, which are then processed and eliminated by the body.

How many treatments will I need? We recommend a series of 3 sessions, spaced about a month apart, to reach your desired result. Depending on the amount of fullness being treated and how your body responds, some patients may want an additional session beyond the initial series.

Is there downtime? Some swelling, tenderness, or bruising in the treated area is common for a few days after treatment. Most patients return to normal activities right away, though we recommend planning around any events if swelling would be noticeable.

When will I see results? Because Kybella works gradually as the body clears treated fat cells, most patients start noticing changes several weeks after a session, with fuller results appearing as treatment continues.

Is Kybella permanent? Yes. Once a fat cell is destroyed, it can't store or accumulate fat again. That said, Kybella doesn't prevent new weight gain in other areas or account for future changes to your body over time.

Am I a good candidate for Kybella? Kybella is best suited for patients with mild to moderate fullness under the chin who want to avoid surgery. A consultation with our team is the best way to find out if it's the right fit for your goals.

Before Your Treatment

To help minimize bruising, swelling, and discomfort:

• Avoid alcohol for 24–48 hours before treatment.

• Avoid non-essential blood-thinning medications and supplements that may increase bruising, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, fish oil, vitamin E, and certain herbal supplements, unless prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not stop prescribed medications without first discussing this with your provider.

• Arrive with clean skin and avoid applying makeup, lotions, or skincare products to the treatment area immediately before your appointment.

• Inform your provider if you have an active skin infection, open wound, significant irritation, or any changes in your health since your consultation.

• Let your provider know if you have difficulty swallowing, take blood thinners, or have a history of excessive bruising or bleeding.

• If you have an upcoming special event, photos, wedding, or travel, allow adequate time for swelling and bruising to resolve.

What to Expect After Kybella

Swelling is very common after Kybella and may be significant. Bruising, tenderness, redness, numbness, firmness, or a temporary “lumpy” feeling may also occur. These effects generally improve gradually as the treatment area heals.

Swelling may be most noticeable during the first several days following treatment and can take 1–2 weeks or longer to fully resolve in some patients.

After Your Treatment

• Apply a cool compress to the treatment area as needed for comfort during the first 24–48 hours. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.

• Keep the treatment area clean and avoid excessive touching, rubbing, or massaging unless specifically instructed by your provider.

• Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours after treatment.

• Avoid alcohol for 24–48 hours after treatment.

• Avoid excessive heat, including saunas, hot tubs, and very hot showers, for approximately 24–48 hours.

• Avoid facials, massage, or other cosmetic treatments to the treated area until the area has adequately healed or your provider gives you clearance.

• Sleep with your head slightly elevated the first night to help minimize swelling.

• Continue your normal skincare routine unless your provider gives you different instructions, but avoid irritating or active products directly over the injection sites until the skin has recovered.

• Stay well hydrated and allow your body time to heal.

Important

Kybella is designed to gradually reduce submental fat. Results are not immediate, and multiple treatment sessions may be recommended depending on your goals and the amount of submental fullness being treated. Treatments are generally spaced at least one month apart.

When to Contact Us

Please contact our office if you have concerns about your healing or if you experience symptoms that seem unusual or are worsening rather than improving.

Seek immediate medical attention for significant difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, severe or rapidly worsening swelling, or other severe or concerning symptoms. Kybella has specific warnings regarding swallowing difficulties and injury to structures in the treatment area.
